The nature of stress, everyone experiences stress in their lives. We are all living under huge stress, stress affects all of us and we all need to get a whole lot better at learning how to deal with it. There are ways that can reduce stress but before we go there, it is important to first recognise it in yourself.
What is stress?
Stress is continual worry, it can be about work, life, family, finances; there are many factors that influence our stress levels. Stress prevents you from relaxing and stress happens when you feel you cannot cope with the demands of a situation. Stress is highly debilitating and can easily move into depression.
Stress makes you feel powerless to cope with a problem, if you endure this kind of stress for a long period of time, it can lead to serious illnesses and depression.
Different stresses, examples are physical, emotional, and social to mention a few. Crisis’s can also cause stress, no one can be completely free of stress regardless of age, occupation, status or wealth, learning how to deal and cope with stress is the answer to this. Stress can often come from when things occur from circumstances beyond your control.
Change is one of the most common causes of stress. Change is part of life for everyone however adapting to change is still a challenge for everyone, learning how to embrace change will certainly relieve the stress associated with change.
Symptoms of stress can affect your mental and physical health, it is therefore so important to deal with stress before it affects your health. Constant irritability, difficulty in making decisions, loss of sense of humour, difficulty concentrating, lack of interest in things that you used to enjoy, feeling increasingly tired and loss of interest in everyday activities, lack of appetite, comfort eating and bad sleep habits. Headaches and migraines change of appetite and weight, restlessness or inactivity, loss of energy, loss of self confidence, feeling down are all symptoms of stress.
Things we need to do to manage stress. Strategies that help people cope with stress are relaxation, releasing and empowering strategies. Exercise is not only good for your body but for your mind as well, research shows that exercise helps to reduces stress levels and anxiety. Regular exercise is excellent in coping with stress.
Listening to music, yoga, deep breathing are all methods to alleviate stress, massage all assist with reducing stress. Running and stretching is also very good in reducing stress. Talking to someone, therapy or a personal coach would be a great way in helping you reduce your stress levels. As stated in the beginning you cannot deal with stress and relieve it, if you do not identify it in your life.

I would have to say a very well worded cover letter will certainly put you ahead of the crowd. Your resume is your marketing document and therefore you have one opportunity to create a good impression. There are many jobs that are not being advertised and if you can articulate your skills in a good covering letter, you might open up other opportunities that you did not even know about.
Tips on writing a winning cover letter
- Be sure you are specific and it is tailored to the role you are applying for. I cannot begin to tell you how many covering letters I get are not for the role they are applying for. It can leave a very bad first impression.
- Write it to the person that has advertised the role, use their name if given and be sure to make it specific to the role you are applying for. A wide, encompassing approach is not the way to go. You have a small window of opportunity to provide specific skills, attributes and value you can bring to the role.
- Give your availability and contact details when applying for your position.
Things to be careful of…………..common mistakes
- The wrong name and wrong role, I get this alot, it does not give a good first impression.
- Nothing relevant to the job you are applying for, sometimes you have no experience at all for what they are asking for, if that is the case rather don’t apply.
- Bad grammar and bad spelling, this is unacceptable especially when there is spell check on a computer.
- Generic letter with no relevant experience for the role you are applying for, you are not being specific to the role you are applying for.
For any one position that I have advertised, there are many, many applicants there are some simple tips that will ensure you are ahead in the race.
Be sure that you check and recheck before sending your resume and covering letter. You have one chance to make a excellent first impression and small or silly mistakes can make a very bad first impression, you don’t want to be starting off on the wrong foot.

- Avoid generic phrases that do not accurately describe what your specific participation was.
- Watch for overuse of any one particular word or phrase, avoid repetition.
Your resume should reflect your values, honesty is very important you cannot lie on your resume. Work ethics are very important; companies want to hire people who can work in teams, energetic and hard working. Qualities such as integrity, creative problem solving and co operation are highly regarded.
